Artist Statement

My photographic work explores people and what makes them who they are. I have always been fascinated by how one individual is so different from the next. In my previous photographic work, I always set up scenes a certain way or told people how to pose and act. This semester I wanted to photograph people in their everyday lives and let them do what they wanted, allowing myself to simply be there to capture the moment.  As you can see in my display, each photograph represents a person along with their personality. One aspect I really focused on this semester was photographing the same person more than once, in order to demonstrate various characteristic or personality traits that they have. I also experimented with this strategy by photographing different foods and capturing their unique identities. Similar to people, when food is taken out of its element, it has various traits that help distinguish them from the other subjects that are like them. What I like about this process is without seeing the title one must take the time to figure out what appears in the photograph.
